NRA Personal Protection in the Home
This is the NRA’s self-defense course, which covers using a handgun for the protection of self and family, and provides information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.
This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for the safe and efficient use of a firearm. It will demonstrate that a defensive mindset is needed to survive in a life-threatening encounter.
This is an 8-hour course, it includes classroom and range time. Course topics cover:
- Firearm selection 
- Ammunition selection 
- Multiple targets 
- Identifying and avoiding possible threats 
- Shooting from cover 
- Clearing stoppage 
- Point shooting 
- In a classroom setting we will cover lethal force 
- The law and the aftermath if you find yourself in a defensive shooting 
- Enhancing home security and setting up a safe room 
NOTE: Lesson III of this course, "Firearms and the Law, and Legal Aspects of Self-Defense," is conducted by an attorney licensed to practice law within the state in which this course is given and who is familiar with this area of the law; a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) who possesses an intermediate or higher Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificate granted within the state; or an individual currently certified to instruct in this area of the law by the state in which this course is presented.
What is needed:
- Students need their own center-fire handgun, with at least two magazines (or speed loaders for revolvers) 
- 300 rounds of ammunition, 
- Hearing and eye protection 
- Holsters and magazine carriers are encouraged, but not necessary. 
Students will receive:
- NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook 
- NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure 
- Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet 
- Course completion certificate.
